Blackie Road Closure
Businesses in the Castroville area will be impacted by Union Pacific Railroad closures on Blackie Road, from Saturday, May 21, 2011 through Monday, May 23, 2011. Alternative routes have been designated for commercial trucks, business deliveries and commuters as detailed in this map.
Beginning Saturday, May 21, at 4:00 a.m., Union Pacific Railroad (UP) will close Blackie Road at Del Monte Avenue to repair the railroad crossing at that location. According to UP, the repairs are needed as the crossing has been damaged by truck and rail traffic and the road must be closed to complete the work. Railroad repairs will last until Monday, May 23, at 12:00 pm, weather permitting.
This temporary closure will impact all commercial establishments in Castroville on Blackie Road east of Del Monte Avenue including Ocean Mist and the businesses of Commercial Parkway. Provisions have been made for employee parking west of the railroad closure at the former D’Arrigo plant. Additional on-street parking will also be available as shown on the attached map.
During this closure period, all traffic with destinations east of Del Monte Avenue must access Blackie Road from Highway 101. For destinations west of Del Monte Avenue, please use Highway 156 to Highway 183 to access Blackie Road. It is advisable for large line trucks to schedule their arrival times during the late evening, night, or very early morning hours due to the anticipated heavy traffic congestion at 101. Truck drivers and commuters should be prepared for delays and congestion on Highway 101 not only because of increased traffic from the detour, but because of on-going Prunedale Improvement Project road construction. Drivers should be alert and watch for detour signage.
