Letter from the President and CEO
Welcome to the 2-1-1 Monterey County’s Website! A service of United Way Monterey County (UWMC) and under the stewardship and guidance of the 2-1-1 Steering Committee, 2-1-1 continues to change lives nationally and right here at home in Monterey County.
Launched by UWMC on 2/11/09, 2-1-1 has revolutionized the way people seek and receive help. As a toll-free, easy-to-remember phone number, 2-1-1connects people with important community services, such as child care, flu-shot information, employment assistance, counseling, food, shelter and more. Available 24 hours a day in more than 170 languages, 2-1-1 is also an integral component of disaster-response infrastructure. In times of disaster, 2-1-1 significantly alleviates non-emergency calls to 9-1-1 and serves as a vital link for individuals seeking to provide resources or volunteer, such as the devastation brought by the San Diego wildfires or the Hurricane’s in the Gulf Coast.
And that is the whole point of 2-1-1, which was designated in 2000 by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) as the national telephone number for information and referral and is now available to approximately 75 percent of Americans and 84 percent of Californians. As community leaders, citizens, legislators and funders, we all must continue our strong commitment to 2-1-1. Our children, families and local communities deserve no less.
