Road Closure Hwy 101 at Airport Blvd

Caltrans has announced that bridge work will be result in a full closure of Hwy. 101 in both directions at Airport Blvd from 9 pm to 6 am for three nights from Monday, May 23 through Thursday morning May 26.

• Motorists headed northbound will be detoured at Abbott Street to Sanborn Road before reaching Hwy. 101.
• Motorists headed southbound will be detoured at Sanborn Road to Abbott Street before reaching Hwy. 101.

The southbound on-ramp at Airport Blvd. continues to be closed until August 31. A detour is in place to access southbound Hwy. 101 using Sanborn Road by going north on Terven then east on Sanborn to the 101 South on-ramp. However, motorists are also encouraged to use the Abbott Street frontage to access the highway by taking Airport/Hansen/Harkins roads west to Abbott St. south to Hwy.101.

This project will reconstruct Airport Blvd., add new traffic signals at Moffett Street and another at De La Torre Street, extend De La Torre Street to the south and build new on/off ramps to and from northbound Hwy. 101. The majority of roadwork is taking place on the east side of the freeway.  Estimated completion is in December, weather permitting.

The contractor for this $8.4 million project is Pavex Construction Division of San Jose. Caltrans reminds motorists that ‘we’re here to get you there.’

Highway 1 Closure

The following is an official message to the residents of Big Sur from Chief Karstens regarding the Highway 1 Closure and Public Safety Services.

Dear Big Sur residents,

For some of us here we are again, for others this may be your first extended road closure.

The Fire Brigade met with Cal Trans, some business representatives, the Chamber of Commerce, CPOA, CERT, St. Parks, and the USFS yesterday.  Before going into the meeting I had spoken with Sheriff, AMR and CHP representatives.  Most of you have seen the email from the Chamber by now regarding the highway.  I wanted to address other possible questions, in particular public safety, that you may have.

* First I would like to address medical emergencies, including vehicle accidents.  AMR, (American Medical Response) will still respond 24/7, the ambulance is stationed at our firehouse for all emergencies requiring an ambulance.  CALL 911 as usual!! Depending on where the emergency is located we have plans in place for transportation, it may be that the patient will need to be transported to Cambria or King City depending on the circumstances.   AMR has made sure we will have a crew staffing the ambulance, and has been in touch with Cal Star helicopter and Cambria ambulance making them aware of our situation.

* Public Safety. USFS has some crew members and engines available in the remote chance we have a vegetation fire, but more importantly they will help us with a structure fire if needed.

SO is making plans to have a deputy come down and stay here until we get one lane open.  They immediately started sending over units to cover from King City the day the road went out.  Today they brought down one of the rescue trucks which is being staged at the firehouse if needed.

CHP is also planning on having an officer stay in the area for the duration.

State Parks has rangers here who are peace officers in the off chance something happens while we are between shift changes with CHP and SO.

CERT members are available if needed, they will also be sending out an email to possibly try and schedule town trip needs.

and as always your friendly Fire Brigade members will be responding if needed!

* Utility Needs. I have spoken with PG&E and they will be sending down a truck and crew starting Saturday night and through Sunday when the worst of the storm is expected.  After that they will evaluate conditions to determine if they will continue to stay on longer.

At our meeting yesterday we also discussed things like fuel, garbage, propane etc.  As the road is open and passable to the south, my understanding is it will be business as usual.

*An email has been sent out regarding any medical needs and medications from the Health Center.

*The schools have plans for Captain Cooper and the High school students.

*The Post Office hours will be 10:00 to 2:00 PM, with mail delivery as usual.  (Not confirmed but I was told that Fed Ex would deliver but not UPS.)

We will have another meeting with Cal Trans when they have more information and after that we may schedule a community meeting.   We will do our best to get information out via emails.

Thank you to all the agencies for so quickly stepping up to the plate to help us out.  It is very much appreciated.

And last but not least thank you to Cal Trans for all your work, everyone please be careful out there driving, look out for Cal Trans units working in the road way!

Please feel free to call the Fire Brigade with any questions I may not have covered here, 667-2113.  Meanwhile, enjoy the quiet time and be safe!

Thank you,

Martha

Prunedale Improvement Project

Project Proposal
The project proposes constructing major operational and safety improvements including interchanges to address the safety and congestion issues within the Prunedale Corridor.

Corridor Overview
US Route 101 is a major north-south highway between the San Jose Metropolitan Area and the Salinas Valley Area and a primary link in the highway network serving interstate traffic up and down the western United States.  Route 101 is also the major north-south arterial in Monterey County, providing access to the agricultural areas of the Salinas Valley and serving recreational trips associated with the Monterey Peninsula, the Pacific Coast and the Los Padres National Forest.  For residents in the Prunedale Area, it provides the only major arterial for the community.  Studies on improving safety and relieving congestion have been ongoing for more that forty years.

Project Design Philosophy
The existing Route 101 Corridor within the project area is currently a 4-lane expressway with numerous at-grade intersections with both left and right-turn access.  The combination of high speed through traffic on Route 101 conflicting with traffic trying to enter or exit the at-grade intersections provides a less than desirable operational and safety condition.  To improve the operations and safety of the Prunedale Corridor, the following Design Principals were adopted:

Remove Left-Turn Access
One of the goals of this project is to increase safety by blocking all left-turn traffic both from Route 101 to local roads and from local roads to Route 101.  This is accomplished by closing all remaining median openings with concrete barrier.

Provide Alternate Route 101 Circulation
With the removal of left-turn access onto Route 101, it was necessary to improve the major at-grade intersections with a new or improved interchange or overcrossing.  The improved intersections then provide U-Turn opportunities for the traveling public that can now no longer turn left onto or off of the state route.

Remove Direct Route 101 Access For Key At-Grade Intersections
To further improve corridor operations, several key at-grade intersections were cul-de-sac’d.  Because these roads could no longer access Route 101 directly, the local street system needed to be reconfigured or improved to prevent homes and businesses from being landlocked.

Route 156 Project

Project Proposal
Route 156 is a Focus Route and gateway for tourists traveling from the Bay Area to the Monterey Peninsula.  On the weekends, 156 is heavily congested and has safety concerns. This project proposes to improve safety, operations and congestion relief by converting the narrow two-lane conventional highway to a four-lane expressway.

The cost to improve the entire corridor is estimated at $350 million. The project team has determined that phasing the project would be the best approach for obtaining funding.

Phase 1
Phase 1 proposes to widen Highway 156 West to a four-lane divided expressway from just west of Castroville Boulevard to just east of Cathedral Oaks Road, and construct an interchange at Castroville Boulevard.  This phase would provide significant local access improvements, which would dramatically improve the safety and operations in that section of the corridor.  It would also provide significant operational improvement for interregional travelers.

Phase 2
The second phase of the project would construct interchange improvements at US 101 and Highway 156 to improve traffic flow in the area.  The Transportation Agency for Monterey County is currently working with Caltrans to define features of these interchange improvements so that future traffic is accommodated with limited impacts to the surrounding community.

CalTrans to Work on Airport Rd

Caltrans and the Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC) have begun making improvements at the Hwy. 101/Airport Blvd. interchange in the City of Salinas

The temporary concrete barrier that has been installed on Airport Boulevard east of the overpass is creating some traffic delays for motorists. In addition, reversing one-way traffic control at the bridge will take place overnight from 8 pm to 6 pm when necessary.

The southbound on-ramp at Airport Blvd. will be closed for about six months from Monday, Oct. 18 through April 2011. A detour will be in place to access southbound Hwy. 101 using Sanborn Road; however motorists are encouraged to take Abbott Street frontage to access the highway.

This project will reconstruct Airport Blvd., add new traffic signals at Moffett Street and another at De La Torre Street, extend De La Torre Street to the south and build new on/off ramps to and from northbound Hwy. 101. The majority of roadwork is taking place on the east side of the freeway.  Estimated completion is December 2011, weather permitting.

The contractor for this $8.4 million safety project is Pavex Construction Division of San Jose. Caltrans reminds motorists that ‘we’re here to get you there.’
